I’ve been thinking about this concept. I’m not sure if it’s more a brand I would start or a branding of myself. Or maybe both.

SMPL (pronounced “simple”):

Another good (in my mind) project done. I’d like to thank Bryan and Tyna for all their awesome work.

and now asking my dad for some books for christmas. Namely “Made to Stick” and “PROCESS” PROCESS is like $45 so we’ll see if he actually gets that one. I’m also asking him for a 640GB hard drive to back up all my photos/studio projects on. hdd’s (hard disk drives) have really come down in price. That one is only like $70. I can’t imagine losing all that stuff if one of my hard drives fails!

This project has been so cyclical. First we were cutting boxes and taping them together for sketch models. Then we put the design in illustrator and started laser cutting it out. After we assembled the box, we would test it… then make a series of, usually, small changes, and do it all over. I think we have 4 hand-cut boxes, and maybe 6 laser cut boxes. Factor in all the waiting around for a laser cutter to free up this time of the semester and you can image the extensive amount of time and testing that has been going into this. By far the most iterative, and tested project I have done yet. It is wonderful to see the effects of the changes that are made. They are often very obvious and even the slightest changes can make a huge difference.

So maybe I don’t get it but I enjoy reading other’s blogs and posting. I know alot of people are just doing this for a grade, but I think if you’re gonna do this you might as well participate. And does no one really have anything to say at all? Well I’ve seen a couple of post on other peoples blogs but I left far more. It’s a good way to see what other people are up to at your own leisure and not when you’re trying to focus on your own project in studio.

how do you talk to kids? How do you interview them? What survey questions are appropriate? And how do you get meaningful data from them?

These are the questions going through my mind as I write the survey/interview questions for our target market of people between ages 13-18. Why do kids stop riding bikes? Do kids even ride bikes these days? How do we make riding bikes more exciting and compete with the excitement that is learning how to drive (cars)? We want to instill in the youth positive feelings about bike riding so that when they grow up common stigmas like, lack of experience, fear, and absence of perceived comfort are now longer prevalent.

And what is comfort anyways? Isn’t safety a relatively false perception? I mean something horrible could happen to you at anytime. Is comfort just a product of habit?

I’m definitely out of my comfort zone so I know we’re doing something right.

this is the final project and like all others it is a culmination of what we have done so far this semester. Our first product was about functionality, then we did research and designed for someone else, and third, we promoted a brand. Now we are promoting use of alt. transit with functionality and research in mind. But this also feels like propaganda. Not the kind we design for but the kind that we are being forced to design for.

Are we learning how to design or are we learning that we shouldn’t drive? Because if it’s design maybe there’s a better project out there… Please, somone prove me wrong. I need to find motivation for this.

Surprise.

No matter how much you experience, life never ceases to catch you off guard. Experimentation is critical, even when you think you know what the results are going to be.

We experimented today in the photography club meeting, not because we were wanting to make things better but because we thought we would have too. We thought that attendance was going to be higher than what could fit in the room and that we were going to connect less with club members due to the size of the club. So we thought about new ways to get personal and we tried one of those breakout sessions where you form small groups ask people complete a simple task. We wanted the new members to learn and hear new things about photography, and as a result, we seasoned officer were the one’s hearing things that we didn’t expect. As a result, I think the members were feeling more connected to each other. We might try this again.
